At the beginning of his Histories, written in the fifth century BC, the Greek writer Herodotus, often known as the "Father of History," established various principles that have informed history-writing ever since: that the memory of the past is worth preserving; that history is the story of peoples or civilizations; and that it frequently describes the conflict between different peoples. This histomap follows the model of Herodotus in recording some of the key events and achievements of the last 4,000 years, and organizes them under broad geographical headings.
